How you format written work depends on the citation style you're using (such as APA or MLA). Each style has it own rules. Always check with your instructor to find out what style you are expected to use. The Libraries have guides on a few of the major citation styles:

More information about citing in MLA, APA, Chicago Manual of Style, and citation in general - including formatting papers - can be found at the Purdue Online Writing Lab.

USC also has a Writing Center where you can get help on all aspects of writing. Some departments also have their own writing centers and tutors - for example, the Engineering Writing Program.
